Tonight, Aaron and I took the kids to our athletic club for “Family Swim Time” at the indoor pool. Coincidentally, tonight I made a New Year’s Resolution to start to learn how to swim. Yes, a New Year’s Resolution. Yes, I know it’s April.

Don’t judge.

For those who know me, you might be wondering how I’m a certified scuba diver if I don’t know how to swim. I have two words: Tanked. Air. In all seriousness, I actually know how to swim…I’m just not very good at it. So tonight, my husband, a former competitive swimmer, decided to support my belated New Year’s resolution endeavor and gave me a workout to get me started: 8 x 50 meters, odd laps easy, even laps hard.

Sounded easy enough.

I started my workout. The first 50 meters was relatively successfully, but 75 meters into it all hell broke loose. My right foot cramped, I got a stitch in my left side, I got water up my nose, and I seriously contemplated sinking to the bottom of my lane so the young hot lifeguard would save me. That plan fizzled when the young hot lifeguard sauntered off his post and I was left to my own devices, cramped and waterlogged in the middle of lane 4.

Determined not to fail my (belated) New Year’s Resolution three pool lengths into a work out, I pushed on. About halfway through, I started to feel like I was going to throw up. I think I drank half of the water in the pool via my nostrils, and I’m fairly certain I started to hallucinate from exhaustion because I thought Charlie Sheen jumped into the pool during lap 6.

With that said, I’m happy to report that I finished the 8 x 50 without lifeguard intervention. I’d also like to report that my five-and-a-half year old daughter decided to race me the last length of the pool…and she beat me. (In my defense, I had a cramp in my right foot, a stitch in my left side, water up my nose, I felt like I was going to throw up, and I’m fairly certain I was also racing Charlie Sheen.)

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go find the Bengay.

In NORTH CAROLINA.

I’m not sure if Mother Nature got that memo yet, but I’ll be wearing flip flops and t-shirts even if she’s throwing 37 degree weather at me.
